St. Agatha Girls’ Secondary School-Kakore Hosts Inaugural Runyankore-Rukiga Workshop

St. Agatha Girls’ Secondary School-Kakore made history on Thursday 20th March, 2025, by hosting the first-ever Runyankore-Rukiga workshop aimed at promoting indigenous language learning and appreciation. The workshop, which brought together students from various secondary schools in Rubanda District including; St. Agatha Girls’ SS Kakore, Bubare SS, Nyaruhanga High School, Nyamweru Seed SS, and Hope High School served as a platform for both students and teachers to gain new insights into the changing dynamics of language studies.

The guest speaker,Prof. Emmanuel Muranga, the Head of the Department of Languages at Kabale University, inspired students to embrace their mother tongue, highlighting the importance of becoming philosophers and writers in the same way that literary icons such as William Shakespeare did. Our language is our identity. If we do not embrace it, we lose an essential part of who we are. Let us write, let us create, and let us be proud of Runyankore-Rukiga,” he said. He emphasized that fluency and competence in Runyankore-Rukiga not only preserve culture but also open doors for academic and literary excellence.

Speaking at the event, Mr.Katongore Kereson, the Headteacher of St. Agatha Girls’ SS Kakore lauded the school’s Language Department, under the leadership of Ms. Muteguzi Elizabeth, for spearheading such a crucial initiative. “This workshop is a great step forward in ensuring that both teachers and learners understand the evolving examination setting and grading system. At St. Agatha, we believe in empowering others, and this is a reflection of that mission,” he stated. According to the Headteacher, this effort will enhance academic performance and promote excellence in language studies across the Kigezi region.

Additionally, the Headteacher reaffirmed the school’s commitment to advancing learning through technology. He announced plans to establish an e-learning center this June, which will be linked to Kabale University’s online learning platform. “We are setting up an e-learning center to connect our students with digital resources at Kabale University. This will revolutionize the way we teach and learn,” he revealed.

The workshop organizer, Mr. Ainomuhisha Apollo, expressed his gratitude to the school administration and Kabale University for supporting and facilitating the event. “This initiative is not just about learning; it is about preserving our culture and ensuring that our students become confident speakers and writers of Runyankore-Rukiga,” he remarked.

The successful hosting of this Runyankore-Rukiga workshop underscores St. Agatha Girls’ SS Kakore’s dedication to academic excellence and community development, setting the stage for more educational collaborations in the future.
